The Challenge
Reece Plumbing operates trade centres and distribution facilities across Australia. When a national fitout program got underway, the specification for compliant handrailing needed to work consistently at scale.
The requirement was clear: stair handrailing and mezzanine barrier handrailing at every site needed to meet AS1657 and hold up in active commercial warehouse environments long-term. Getting that right once is straightforward. Achieving the same compliance outcome and finish quality across multiple sites, without variation, is where the complexity comes in.
The reseller engaged for the national rollout needed a modular system that could be replicated site to site without custom fabrication at each location. Structural compliance under AS1170 was non-negotiable, and the finish specification required hot-dip galvanising to AS4680 for durability in operational industrial environments.
The Solution
Uni-Fit’s modular galvanised handrail system was specified across the national Reece Plumbing fitout program through one of Uni-Fit’s reseller network partners.
The system suited the application for two reasons. First, the modular design means each installation uses the same components throughout, delivering consistent results across every site without the variability that comes with fabricating handrails on location. Second, the system carries full certification to AS1657 (fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders) and AS1170 (structural loading requirements) – the two standards any compliant stair and mezzanine installation in a commercial facility needs to meet.
All components are hot-dip galvanised to AS4680. In an active warehouse environment like a Reece trade centre, where foot traffic, trolleys and pallet jacks are part of the daily routine, a galvanised finish offers significantly greater longevity than painted or powder-coated alternatives.
The result is a handrail installation that can be replicated across the national program: the same components, the same finish, the same certifications, site after site.
