Cold storage facilities are one of the harshest environments you can put a handrail system into. Constant temperature cycling between ambient and sub-zero conditions, heavy condensation on every surface, wet floors from defrost cycles, and the physical demands of workers moving product in bulky PPE – all of it puts safety infrastructure under pressure that a standard commercial system simply isn’t designed to handle.
When a painted handrail starts to rust inside a freezer, it doesn’t just look bad. It creates a surface integrity problem in a food-grade environment, and it signals to your auditors and WHS inspectors that the facility’s maintenance standards need attention.
Uni-Fit’s galvanised steel modular handrail system is the right choice for cold storage. It handles the temperature variation, moisture exposure, and corrosive conditions that cold storage environments generate – without the surface deterioration that affects painted and powder-coated alternatives.
Why Cold Storage Is a Different Problem
Most handrail systems are tested in ambient conditions. Cold storage isn’t ambient. Freezer rooms operate at -18°C to -25°C, blast freezers go lower, and the transition zones between temperature-controlled areas and loading docks cycle constantly between cold and warm air. That thermal movement contracts and expands fittings repeatedly – and fittings that aren’t properly secured work loose over time.
Condensation is the other issue. When warm, humid air meets cold surfaces, moisture forms on every exposed surface including handrails, fittings, and base plates. In a painted system, that moisture finds its way under the coating and starts corroding the steel from the inside. Galvanised steel handles this differently – the zinc coating bonds to the steel rather than sitting on top of it, giving it far better resistance to the sustained moisture exposure that cold storage environments produce.
Uni-Fit fittings are tightened to 55NM with an Allen key and secured with grub screws. They hold under thermal cycling in a way that lighter clip-together systems don’t. And because the system is modular, individual sections can be replaced without dismantling the whole run – useful in an active cold store where taking a section offline needs to happen quickly and cleanly.
Where Cold Storage Facilities Use Uni-Fit
Freezer and Chiller Room Interiors
Handrails inside the freezer and chiller rooms need to perform at temperature. Uni-Fit’s galvanised fittings maintain their structural integrity in sub-zero conditions and resist the surface corrosion that condensation cycling causes over time. They meet the requirements of AS 1657 for fixed platforms, walkways, and stairways regardless of the operating temperature of the space.
Transition Zones and Airlock Areas
The areas between temperature-controlled zones and ambient areas – airlocks, transition corridors, and staging areas – experience the most aggressive condensation and temperature cycling in the facility. These are exactly the locations where painted systems fail fastest. Galvanised Uni-Fit fittings are the practical choice for these high-moisture, high-cycle environments.
Loading Docks and Receival Areas
Cold storage loading docks have all the usual challenges of a standard dock – trucks reversing, pedestrians, level changes, and edge drops – plus the added complexity of temperature differentials, wet floors from condensation, and workers in heavy PPE who may have reduced grip and mobility. Uni-Fit’s Guard-Pro heavy-duty barrier system provides vehicle and pedestrian separation with impact-rated protection suited to the demands of a cold storage receival operation.
Mezzanine Levels and Elevated Platforms
Many cold storage facilities have elevated picking platforms, mezzanine storage levels, or control rooms above the warehouse floor. Edge protection and stairway handrails on these structures need to comply with AS 1657 and hold up in the cold, wet conditions of the storage environment. Uni-Fit’s barrier rail system handles these applications without the corrosion issues that affect alternative systems in refrigerated spaces.
External Hardstand and Yard Areas
Truck marshalling areas, external receival yards, and hardstand perimeters around cold storage facilities need durable barrier systems that cope with outdoor exposure, vehicle proximity, and the constant wash-down that food-grade facilities require. Galvanised fittings resist corrosion in these combined outdoor and wash-down environments without ongoing maintenance.
Stairways and Access Between Levels
Multi-level cold stores and facilities with plant rooms above the storage areas need stairway handrails that are compliant, solid, and resistant to the moisture conditions of the building. Uni-Fit systems work across straight and turning stairway configurations and can be installed or reconfigured without disrupting cold store operations.
Food Safety and WHS Compliance
Cold storage facilities in Australia operate under a layered compliance framework – AS 1657, the Work Health and Safety Act, the National Construction Code, and food safety standards under FSANZ where applicable. Surface integrity of infrastructure inside food-grade environments is part of that picture. Rust and surface deterioration on handrails inside a cold store is a food safety issue as well as a WHS one.
All Uni-Fit handrail systems are manufactured to comply with AS 1657 (Fixed Platforms, Walkways, Stairways and Ladders). Every product is backed by a two-year warranty, subject to correct installation.
